Dam & Pond Sediment Survey
Background
Pond/dam over silting, is a common problem and environmental risks. When over silting takes place, the TSS (Total Suspended solids) in the discharge from these ponds into natural streams or rivers can lead to heavy fines and/or worse the stopping of operations until the problem is resolved. S.A.M.E. Dredging offer our customers a simple and effective solution to measure the sediment blanket, to know what the current situation is before it turns in to a huge problem.
How Does It Work?
An Echo Sounder is attached to a small remote-controlled boat, that is linked to a GPS. The Echo Sounder transmits low and high sound beams into the water. This data determines the depth of the water and the top of the sediment blanket. This data is processed to create a 3D image of the sediment profile. In several locations on the dam a probe will be pushed into the sediment blanket to determine the full depth of the sediment, in conjunction with technical drawings of the pond, volumes can be determined with great accuracy. Conducting several surveys over a few months will determine the rate of over silting.
